The Cat named virgil
I am first and foremost a storyteller. My work explores ideas about identity, personal relationships, and finding one’s way through life. As someone who has Dissociative Identity Disorder, I myself have struggled with the concept of identity. I’m not the same person who was born into this body, yet I will still use it and this brain to tell stories about people from all walks of life. Everyone deserves to have their voice heard and their struggles relayed. To live is to have loved.
The stories I tell through drawings are not only based on my own experiences, but from others in my life as well as lives I imagine and wish to share. The color palettes chosen reflect the mood and thoughts of the figures depicted; their body language describes in more detail the scene they will now forever be holding. My works are snapshots of intimate moments between friends, families, rivals, lovers, and mainly a combination of all of these.
While my work is primarily done through pictorial means, I also bring to life those stories in other ways. I plan and sew together costumes of original characters and others and pose in these costumes in photographs as well as perform.
It is my belief that humans are nothing without the stories they tell and the relationship between these tales and identity. My art works as means to bring those feelings that I felt while creating these narratives to those who know nothing about them. If just one person can relate, feel, or love as these completely imaginary beings do, then that will be enough.
I studied professionally at SUNY Brockport in Brockport, NY and obtained a Bachelor of Science with a Drawing Concentration in winter 2023. I've been running the Etsy store since the end of 2021, with plans to expand off the site as well as include other artists in a conjoined online shop. My first tabled event where I was selling my own artwork was at SugoiPop in August of 2023 (pictured below). I continue to expand my knowledge of art and the creation process in my own time and have started studying other means (sewing, bookbinding, crocheting, etc.) than those I studied for my degree. I'm always looking for more ways to tell the story.
